Weekend Coffee Share

It’s time once again for Weekend Coffee Share.

If we were having coffee, I’d say, “Oh look, I slept an hour later than I thought I did.” And then I’d remember that we hadn’t yet changed the clocks for daylight savings time. I’d realize that when I checked Facebook on my phone and saw everybody’s complaints about daylight savings time.

I understand why people hate that one night when the time change occurs, because they lose an hour of sleep that night. But most people were complaining about daylight savings time in general, and this I don’t agree with. I’m a night owl. I’d much rather have that extra hour of daylight in the evening, when I’m awake and active, than in the morning, when I’m asleep. Just call me contrary.

I’d also tell you that after the coldest February and early March in a long time, we are finally back into our normal temperature range for this time of year. We had been in the high 30s to very low 40s F., but now were back in the mid to upper 50s, which is much better. And I don’t envy my family and friends back in New England, where I grew up. They are supposed to have another big snow storm overnight Monday/Tuesday.

Finally, I’d tell you that I don’t have much else to tell you, and that’s a good thing. One of the best aspects of retirement is that each day is pretty much the same as the previous day. With the exception of the occasional routine doctor’s appointment or social event, anything out of the ordinary would probably be bad, so I’m happy when my days are uneventful.

And now I’d like to know: How have things been going for you? Well, I hope. Until next week …

Three Things Thursday

Once again it’s time for Three Things Thursday:

three things that make me smile: an exercise in gratitude – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog with the happy

Three Things Thursday

One

On a recent day driving out and about, my husband and I came across this miniature water wheel in someone’s front yard:

I guess if you’re going to have a small river in your yard, you might as well make artistic use of it. I give these homeowners two thumbs up!

Two

wedding rings and bouquet

Just yesterday we received an invitation to our niece’s wedding. I just love weddings, even if they do always make me cry.

I once started weeping when, on a road trip, we drove past a church from which the bride and groom were exiting. And I had no idea who these people even were. Just call me sentimental.

Weekend Coffee Share

It’s time once again for Weekend Coffee Share.

weekend-coffee-share

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that for the first time in quite a long time, I feel caught up with the various projects I’ve set up to find meaning in my life. I’ve finished my previous reading undertakings and am ready to take on this month’s reading plan (short stories). I’ve kept up with the 52-Week Writing Challenge on Medium and am tossing around several new ideas for personal essays as future entries, and I’ve lost three pounds. It’s amazing how satisfying little victories feel.

I’d also tell you that my husband and I continue to enjoy watching foreign TV series. We recently got through the French police/crime series Spiral; seasons 1–4 are available on Netflix, 1–5 on Hulu. It was eye-opening to see how much the French justice system differs from ours here in the U.S. Now we’re watching The Tunnel, a story about a murder victim found straddling the English/French border in the Eurotunnel. Since half the body was on each side, the English and the French have to cooperate in the investigation. According to the ending credits on each episode, this series was based on a similar one from Sweden, The Bridge, so that will be the next one we’ll look for. We’ve had Amazon Prime and Netflix subscriptions for several years, but thanks to our daughter we now also have a Hulu subscription (Christmas gift), just in case we couldn’t find enough to watch on the other two.

And I’d tell you that my husband and I have decided to take over one of the garden plots available here in our retirement community to grow herbs this summer. We might also plant a few tomato plants, as there’s really nothing quite like a fresh, vine-ripened tomato. I grew tomatoes along the fence in our suburban back yard for many years and even canned quarts and quarts of them for winter use. I don’t plan on canning ever again, however.

Finally, I’d ask you what’s happening in your life. What little victories have you experienced lately? Or do you need a couple of hugs or some moral support? I’d be happy if you’d let me know in the comments.

And I hope to see you back here for next week’s Weekend Coffee Share.

Three Things Thursday: Lawn Art

Once again it’s time for Three Things Thursday:

three things that make me smile: an exercise in gratitude – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog with the happy

Three Things Thursday

This week I have a gallery of three photos to offer you. Recently as my husband and I were out and about, we drove past this house, where, apparently, an artist lives. We were so intrigued that we drove to the end of the road, turned around, and stopped to take photographs. We’re assuming that the artist doesn’t mind if people take pictures. If he or she did, he or she wouldn’t have put all these creations out there in plain sight, right?

I hope you enjoy seeing these works of homespun art as much as we did. (Click on any photo to see a larger version.)

Until next week …

Weekend Coffee Share

It’s time once again for Weekend Coffee Share.

weekend-coffee-share

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you how delighted I was last week to connect with so many of you on my maiden excursion into Weekend Coffee Share! Thanks to everyone who welcomed me and responded to my post. I was hoping to open up some interaction with other bloggers, and you didn’t disappoint me.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I was also delighted to discover that many of you are writers. You helped me gather up enough courage to announce that I, too, am a writer and have chosen 2017 as the year I concentrate seriously on that work. At the beginning of the year I joined The Writing Cooperative on Medium so that I could participate in their 52-Week Writing Challenge. I’m a Virgo, which means I’d good at keeping my word, so committing to write an entry a week for the challenge has helped me. My work is here. If any of you would care to take a look, I’d appreciate it.

If we were having coffee, I’d say thanks once again for listening. I’m still working on developing my writer’s voice, and the Weekend Coffee Share is another exercise I’m using for that purpose.

And I’d also say that I hope everyone has a good week until next weekend!

Three Things Thursday

Once again it’s time for Three Things Thursday:

three things that make me smile: an exercise in gratitude – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog with the happy

Three Things Thursday

One: First Flowers of Spring

red rhododendron bush

Daffodil plants have been pushing up their green shoots for some time now. But the red flowers on this rhododendron bush are the first floral blooms I’ve seen.

The rhododendron is the official flower of Washington State. It won’t be long now before we’ll be seeing these gorgeous flowers in their full array of bright, vivid colors.

Two: Margarita Day Dinner

Corona beer with sombrero

Tuesday was Margarita Day! Four times a year our retirement community provides a dinner for all residents of the various independent-living units. Our Tuesday evening dinner celebrated the occasion of the day with Mexican food: tacos, cheese enchiladas, rice, and refried beans. And Margaritas, of course, lots of Margaritas.

But some diners chose an alternate beverage.

Three: Amazon Locker

A couple of days ago I spotted this outside my local supermarket:

Amazon locker

I’d heard that Amazon was offering locker delivery, but I’d never seen one of their lockers before. This one’s name is Theo, and I was able to add it as an alternate delivery address to my Amazon account.

But then I deleted it. Why would I want my stuff put into a locker when I can have it delivered directly to my door? I know this is probably a convenience for some Amazon customers, but I’ll stick with direct delivery.

Until next Thursday …

Weekend Coffee Share

In the past I’ve read other bloggers who participate in the Weekend Coffee Share. I often thought I’d like to participate but never did the actual work to figure out how to do it. But when Nerd in the Brain, who also hosts Three Things Thursday, announced that she would be taking on the mantle of hosting Weekend Coffee Share, I knew it was my time to jump in.

Here, then, is my first submission for Weekend Coffee Share.

weekend-coffee-share

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you how discouraged I am over the current situation in the U.S. Every new headline is another cause for worry. A lot of what’s going on would be funny … if it weren’t so serious. And I fear many citizens are not taking all of this seriously enough. What’s happening now is not just something we can trust will work itself out. I am truly frightened by what I’m seeing. Read this article “We have at most a year to defend American democracy, perhaps less“ to see why. Thank you, and now I’ll try to stop obsessing over this.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you about all the television I’m watching to distract me from obsessing. The AMC drama Humans returned Monday night for its second season. The focus of the new season seems to be on the question of what constitutes consciousness and what happens if/when androids can achieve consciousness. Heady thoughts for someone interested in the intersection of psychology and literature. And tonight the second season of Showtime’s Billions begins. This show pits a wealthy tech billionaire (played by Damien Lewis) against a U.S. attorney (played by Paul Giamatti) determined to bring him down. Billions is a fluffy but enjoyable self-indulgence for me. And while I’m on the subject of Showtime, it’s too bad the network undertook to eke out yet another season for Homeland, which has long since outgrown its premise and now has no idea what it is. In the last two or three months we’ve watched a number of foreign series on Netflix: Dicte (about a Danish journalist), Case (a police procedural set in Iceland), and The Break (a police procedural set in Belgium) that provided insight into other cultures. Currently we are caught up in the reign of Queen Victoria on PBS’s Masterpiece Theatre.

If we were having coffee, I’d ask about what’s happening in your world. And I’d tell you I look forward to next week.

Three Things Thursday

It’s Thursday again! Time for Three Things Thursday.

Three Things Thursday

(Click on photos to see a larger version.)

Welcome, Shorts Weather!

On Sunday the temperature got all the way up to 46 degrees F. As my husband and I were driving to a local restaurant for an early Valtentine’s Day dinner, we say two young boys (probably 10 or 12) run across the road from a local drug store with a soda fountain. They were carrying their soda cups, and both were wearing shorts and T-shirts.

It always amuses me that kids are so eager for summer to begin that just about any temperature above freezing provides an excuse to break out the summer clothes. I was comfortable in a wool sweater.

An Early Valentine’s Day Dinner

We usually avoid the holiday rush by going out for our Valentine’s Day dinner a day or two ahead of time. This year we took advantage of a special from one of our favorite restaurants that expired on Sunday, February 12. We feel we got a good deal on salad, sirloin steak with prawns, vegetables, and cheesecake for dessert. We also got window seats looking out on the marina, and it was even a nice sunny day!

Women’s March on Washington: Washington State, Olympia
January 21, 2017

My daughter and I went down to the state capital to march last Saturday. We didn’t take any signs of our own, but I’m always envious of other peoples’ creativity.

Here are three that amused me.
